.....computing... my history....
pete said i was only allowed to do this if i found pictures of them all..... and here they are.... a trip down memory lane inspired by my mam saying, when luke got his ipod nano for christmas and i explained what it was that they'd just bought him, "well its just like a walkman then"... and me having to say well yes just like a walkman and no completely not like a walkman. after this i got to thinking about all the computers i'd ever owned!
and here is the first a sinclair zx81. hours of fun typing in programmes that made x's and dots look like space inavder games then trying to save the typed in game to cassette only to find it hadn't worked. the big brick on the back is the ram pack giving you a whole 16k... yes a whole 16k!!... of ram. it had a tendency to wobble from time to time if you pressed the keys on the keyboard too hard causing you to lose all you had just typed!!
and then an acorn atom. the precursor to the bbc micro. can't remember much about this other than it had the most ridiculous cobbled together power pack. bought it second hand and the power supply was nearly as big as the machine and twice as heavy!! same problems with saving to tape. but to be honest it was lots of fun!!
and then the bbc micro! real computing! and i had a floppy disk drive!
some great games that actually looked like real games and the ability to create databases!!! the options were endless for making lists of things! and a made a great beeping noise when it powered on!
and then the amiga 500 plus. can't remember now what the plus stood for but it must have been cool. and a move to 3 1/4 inch floppy disks. this was meant to be better than pc's and in many ways it was and we did a good job of convincing ourselves but commodore were never going to surpass microsoft despite, in terms of home computing, been able to do so much more than you could on a windows pc at the time. hours of fun making ridiculous animations that were quite frankly shit!!! and playing the adams family game... a whole wasted summer to complete this epic platformer!

and several windows based pc's. my first internet experience. remember having discussions with people about the internet package i had with bt that gave me about 10 hours access a month for about £15 and wondering why anyone would ever want to be online for more than that in a month!! one of the pc's ended up with pete exchanged for a yamaha bass and a little cash and until recently i think the monitor was still in action!!
and then my beautiful sony vaio. a beautiful machine that still lies in bits on top of the cupboards in the study it saw me through my social work diploma, found me experimenting with drum loops, and got me playing with digital photos.
and finally that infront of which i sit now... the realisation dawned eventually that there was only one brand you should ever own and that was apple anything else is just for other people. it's not just a laptop its a way of life. i am now a more beautiful person simply because of my macbook.....
........still reading "no logo"........... ;-)
from a macine that at best at the capacity to store 16k of data to a one with gigaboons upon gigaboons of storage.... a journey of around 30 years...... quite emotional now.....
