.....the sky at night

This is a new picture of the sky in gamma rays. It's spread out like a map of the world but is actually the sphere of the whole sky. The stripe across the middle is our galaxy (which is a flat spiral, but because we're in it, we see it side-on) and the centre of the galaxy is in the middle. The object in the sky just above centre on the far right is the remnant of a star that went bang 350,000 years ago and the bang blew a bubble in the galaxy. We live in that bubble. There were no extinctions at the time but ice records may show that the ozone layer got a bit zapped by it.
