....2nd of the year
having only blogged once this year i feel the need to return to it....
...for many reasons
1. there is a lot of stuff about to happen and i would like a record of it
2. my mind is fuelled with things i want to write down to remember as a consequence of reading richard dawkins' "the greatest show on earth: the evidence for evolution"
3. i've accepted that while the daily pictures are nice the absence of them should not stop me from blogging
4. and i miss rambling on about thing i think i know about (and don't)
...I've said before that for me the debate about the relevance of christianity, and all faiths for that matter, is over. I prefer to refer to the bible as christian mythology for now as in essence it is no different than writings about greek, roman, or egyptian gods (and as an aside the mythologies of the christian faith are based on many stories from mythologies that went before them). my point, and there is just one, would be that i agree to an extent with some christian commentators that evolution is "unbelievable" in the sense that for a novice in the area like myself the concepts can be difficult to understand (indeed dawkin's advises not to read a particular section of his latest if your tired as it's difficult to get your head around) and are utterly amazing. however, the theory is based on evidence and facts. now.... you may say, and indeed we might find in years to come, that some of the assumptions are not right that things didn't happen quite like we think... but the overarching (for me) fact of evolution will remain. when you consider how much of our dna we share with pigs, horses, monkeys, and even trees you have to begin to consider the reality that we are all linked by the tree of evolution. faith is exactly the opposite... it is not based on fact... to base it on fact would not make it faith anymore... faith is deliberately mystical, unfathomable, because it needs to be or then it wouldn't be faith. with evolution i am given a set of facts from which i can make up my own mind with faith i am told there are no facts i should just believe..... oh you know, that's enough already...... you'll either be reading thinking a) yeah exactly or b)what's he going on about or c) you'll disagree; and if you disagree nothings going to change you - least of all my blog.
....it frustrates me though that in our schools christianity is put across as fact - especially in things like easter and chrsitmas assembleys. i have nothing against the mythologies or some of the ethics but we are at a place in our intellectual evolution where it's effectively "game over" for religion
.....it frustrates me that insurance policies include statements like "acts of god"
......it frustrates me that i am told in a training session on loss and bereavement that people of faith are more aware of "a bigger picture". i'm sorry but there's no bigger "picture" than the bigger picture of evolution!
anyway.........
read dawkins' latest book and if you haven't already read "the god delusion" and if you're still not convinced then there's nothing more can be done...
i will not blog about it again (only.... you know i will ;-))
the lighter things......
i'm off work, which is always good and have had luke to tennis this morning which he seemed to enjoy.... well he wants to go back for another to hours tomorrow! while i'm off i need to do some final prep to the dj stuff for alex and alison's wedding which is a week on saturday.... very exciting.... i'm listening to loads of different stuff as a consequence of getting ready for this and it's great!
I've discovered spinning, or cardio cycling as it's called at my gym, which is a great workout and coming up in a couple of weeks i've got my regular coast to coast jaunt with tony....
