....hull? dull? no hull is not dull!

.....have been to hull and eaten enough to last me until christmas (which is actually just around the corner!) ....let me tell you about it!

we drove down on saturday, a little hung over after our great night out with chris and lynne, and got there for about lunch time and headed straight for the deep. this was a great exhibition about our blue planet. it pointed out that earth is probably the worst possible name we could have come up with for our planet. it would more appropriate to call of it ocean because most of it is! it took us through the formation of the earth and the evolution of life in the sea. the highlight for me was the mud skipper. simply put, an evolutionary link between animals of the sea and animals of the land. they can breathe air and extarct air from water. they can use their "limbs" to swim or move about on land. brilliant. we saw sharks and sword fish and a myriad of multi coloured fish. a great exhibition. we then headed off to our hotel; the village. these are fabulous hotels that do all the basics and give you a pool with sauna and steam room, and a gym.

....on our first evening we headed off to curry. now, i'm not usually a fan of the all you can eat buffet but this had good reviews and we thought it would give luke a chance to try a little of everything. the place was nice, the starters were excellent, and the main courses ok. now you have to factor in that with most meals i could eat starters every time at the expense of main courses, so i'm probably not the best judge. but we had a lovely meal and discovered that luke likes onion bhajis, the yellow yoghurt sauce stuff, nan bread and chicken korma. we're used to the food from our local take away where all the meat is halal and the only down side i thought about curry was that the meat didn't seem to be of the highest quality; although the lamb dish i had was good. and back to the hotel for a sleep and day 2...

...and off we went to east park for a car show. we were expecting classic cars, and we got some of them, but most of the exhibitors were playing the "i've got bigger speakers than you game" - chav central - it looked like henleys had sponsored the event!! but it was fun and luke had a great time and now has immense plans for his first car! we saw some class minis, and porsches and ferraris (am i even spelling these things right - you know me 'n' cars - my first love - not!)

.....and then for our second night meal out luke decided he fancied italian. so off we went to la perla. the welcome was fabulous, from who i think was the owner. they were great with luke and the food was fabulous. luke went garlic bread, spaghetti bolognese and tiramisu. christine had pate and lasagne, and i had mozarella caprese, diavola pizza and ice cream. it was all faultless and if you find yourself in hull, go, you won't be dissapointed. once the owner heard the accent he ws talking about a football fan from the north east who was in having a meal when newcastle were playing their last game in the season they went down. he felt he should put some music on because he didn't want to ruin the northeast man's day. "i'll turn this off" he said, "no no leave it on i'm a sunderland fan i'm having a great night"!!!

...and we're home now and have had a great time. hull is industrial and not particularly pretty (in my opinion) but it was all good and a fine way to spend the bank holiday weekend.....
