....watching the news this morning i was told that the government are proposing to pay schools additional funds to educate "problem" children (some would argue the problem is the structure not the child) and to ascertain how many such children there are they will fund based on the number of children who receive free school meals. and to receive free school meals your household income as to be below 16k a year. are they suggesting that the "problem" children equate to the children from low income families? that appears to be the insinuation! surely not! have you met some children from high income familes! there is no direct correlation between low income and problem children. yes, i do understand that there are times when poverty, poor housing, inappropriate parenting, and influencing social factors play a role in developing problem behaviour but so does arrogance, inflated self worth, an i'm better than you attitude because i'm richer than you.... i'm sure the policy makers would agree so why make the direct connection between free school meal provision and poor behaviour? why not provide schools with adequate funding to meet the needs of pupils appropriately including those that are defined as "difficult" no matter what their social background?
