...who would have thought of such a thing?

these new sachets they are advertising on tele, i think made by nescafe, where the coffee, milk, and sugar are all in the sachet. so all you have to do is open the sachet, put the contents into a mug, pour on boiling water, and drink. now, correct me if i'm wrong, but it's not too flippin' difficult to make a cup of coffee with out this pre-prepared solution! also, what if you don't have milk? what if you don't have sugar? and don't get me started about the fact that it will be full of chemicals to keep it stable! you could probably bury one and find it again in 50 years and it would probably be fine! and no! that's not a good thing! it's a bad thing. now, i love my coffee, and there's something in the time it takes to make in my filter coffee maker to make the coffee, to enjoy the aroma, and then the incredible taste.... and all of that reduced to a sachet... as long as you like it white with sugar! for flips sake!
and don't get me started on how this is reflective of the reductionist nature of modern life... microwave meals, dehydrated food, take away, fast food. no one wants to take any time any more. people are motoring at break neck speed desperate to see or do the next thing. it becomes about doing the next thing so you can tell everyone (maybe through a blog ;-)) rather than engulfing yourself in the moment, emerging yourself in the experience. how many people do you see experiencing the event they are at (anything from a gig to a kids birthday party) through a view finder rather than simply through their eyes. we are becoming desperate to record every moment and share it with the world. i have thousands of photographs of the last 3 years since i got my macbook, probably 10 times the amount (if not more) of the photographs that my parents have of me from age nought to eighteen. we are obssesed with documenting and recording and sharing.... and yes i do it as much as anyone... my point here is that sometimes the primary focus of the process becomes the recording and sharing of the event (to, lets face it, show how great our lives are..... do we share as readily when something is not so good?) rather than simply enjoying the event and creating cerebral memories.......
