....maybeshewill maybeshewont

...tonight has been spent in the company of nik and alex and some metal bands at durham live lounge! what can i tell you.

...we arrived just as maybeshewill were about half way through their first song. these guys didn't disappoint! we first saw them at brainwash in leeds and have loved the ever since. they were down the bill tonight but it was them we turned out to see. epic an intense...

...we then saw ocean... now they were a bit loud and shouty for my taste but they held my attention, put on an astounding performance, and played some intricate and beautiful bits among the loudness despite the bass player having what appeared to be technical hitch after technical hitch....

....and then the headlining act earthtone9..... desperate... dear me desperate.... they've been around (i'm sure the singer (term used here loosely) said one of the songs went back to the 80's) quite a while and... well... what can i say?? there's a time to leave it to the younger guys to do some types of music and i'd suggest that metal may be one of those genres. you how when a dad is, well, dad dancing at a wedding and it's frankly just a bit embarrassing and cringe worthy... well that's how earthtone9's set left me feeling... i wanted it to be over just so everyone could leave and get on with their lives.... it felt contrived, it wasn't particularly clever or interesting, and for me this type of music has moved on so far since they were doing it first time around.... guitarist number one had the look of jasper carrot about him, the bass player looked the guy off masterchef (not the little bald one with glasses - the other one) and guitarist number 2 had the look of the taller chuckle brother. the lead singer looked like a dad in his, frankly, quite embarrassing rock t-shirt. nik made the most astute observation that a couple of them looked like teachers... you know like when you turn up for the school trip and the male teachers have worn their jeans!!....

anyway overall a very enjoyable night... ending with falafels bought from our favourite falafel seller opposite the fishtank in durham.... and a nice cup of tea.... i'll put my vessels t back in the draw to await being brought out for another journey into the metal gig!
