...when is a dj not a dj

...me 'n' miller hadn't been into durham for sometime... so last night off we went. we had a fun time starting in the swan and 3 cygnets for a couple of sam smiths before heading off to pizza express for a ...well.. pizza, preceded by dough balls and olives. we had a mighty fine adult type chat about serious shit before slowly getting sozzled with the whole night descending into drunken chaos....

...as part of the night we got chance to observe some dj's... or so called dj's! the first in jimmy allens was at least beat matching and manipulating stuff but looked as though he was close to death he moved so little...he had a miserable look on his face... had he got up and moved a little to his music he may have been able to shed a pound or two.... then in loveshack i hailed the dj and asked -
"so, how do you get a gig in a place like this then?"
"look don't even thing about it"
"why not"
"i got this gig 'cos i've known the owner for 10 years"
"so", i said, "it's not how good you are it's who you know" (the truth of this statement was soon to be revealed)
"exactly!" he said. "anyway I'm a bit long in the tooth so you're leaving it a bit late aren't you"
cheeky git!!

what followed, in terms of his dj'ing was a lesson in how to dj when you're really not bothered and when the people in the club are so drunk they don't care. it was car crash mixing, period's of silence and no consideration of giving any flow to what was going on. at one point we went from 70's to disco, to the jam, to tinchy stryder... now this in itself is not problem - playing different genre's - in fact a dj's lot, i feel, is to take people on a musical journey by making links between styles and era's... but you should at least be making links ....you know you could get from la roux to some 80's stuff easily, or some cee-lo green to stevie wonder and michael jackson.... you see how it goes... but it some move gradually (the caveat to that would be every so often in a set crashing in something from a completely different genre works... but "from time to time" not every song...

so clearly it is who you know and not how good you are... my mission ....to get out there and dj more and eradicate the world of 3rd rate dj's! i feel the power of a super hero upon me!
