......every once in a while
...every once in a while you are reminded of the fragility of life and the 'world' you live in. The call you don't want to get ever as a parent is your son's friend ringing to say 'Luke's had an accident, he's come off his bike, it looks bad, he's not moving....' The 10 minute drive from home with Christine to where he was lying face down on the ground was the longest I've ever experienced. Everything goes through your head... everything....
But you're faith in human nature is restored when you get there and he is surrounded by a bunch of lovely people. His friend (although somewhat shocked) had got his phone from his pocket and rang us, a man had phoned an ambulance and stayed with him, another fella had gone to the Tesco local down the road and bought ice because the 999 call response woman had said that would help, he was covered in the coats of everyone that was there to keep him warm. And the first thing I saw was him lift his head to speak and a huge sense of relief envelopes you....
The NHS gets called.... and yes we had a bit of a wait.... but as ever I'm impressed with the care and compassion and concern you get.... Doctors and Nurses are great. He will heal. He will now not moan when told to wear his helmet. I'm convinced he will be riding down flights of steps again sometimes soon.....
