.....getting the hang of it
....Sunday morning sat in the quiet of the living room with Christine and Luke still asleep I've got to thinking about saying to Christine yesterday "I think I'm finally getting the hang of this...!" And by this I mean Life! I think for years I've carried around a great deal of tension. Everything's a chore, everything can be put off. And now I've got to the point where I just get on and do stuff. Now, this is probably no great revelation to people who are just like this naturally but for me just getting on and doing stuff is a great transformation. In the past if I had something to do on an afternoon waiting to do it would dominate my day. Rather than taking the opportunity to do other stuff while I wait for the afternoon thing to happen I would sit in a state of suspended tension waiting for the afternoon thing. This has changed over the last couple of years with the realisation that a lot of the things that need to be done don't take very long and once they are done there is a huge sense of satisfaction.
This, in part at least, is down to me applying ideas like the two minute rule and having a trusted system to capture what I need to do and not procrastinating and managing my diary effectively (both at work and at home). Being organised frees up, what I like to term, psychological capital. It reduces stress and anxiety and means I get on with life! (All from David Allen's great book Getting Thing Done).
Anyway the result of this was that yesterday we just decided to go and get the Christmas Tree and within about an hour or so it was purchased, erected, and decorated and we headed off to Look Lush so I could have a sun bed and Christine could get her nails done! Then the Christmas Cards got written with a sherry in hand and Jim Reeves doing Christmas Carols on the turntable.... and then we chilled out and watched Strictly.... lovely!
Today I've got a table to wax, Christine has picture frames to paint silver, and I'm going to get my hair cut.... so hey I can't just be hanging out here! ;-x
